Confucius Teahouse – Hungarian students at the Chinese Bridge International Competition

On 19 December 2017 (Tuesday) 5.p.m, the Confucius Institute at University of Szeged invited

This year marked the 10-year anniversary for the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign High School Students, organized by the Confucius Institute’s Headquarters (Hanban). The Preliminary Rounds for national qualifying was in April, took place in Szeged and was organized by the Chinese Embassy in Budapest. It was won by the student of the SZTE Confucius Institute; Ekler-Szabó Botond Alexander – student of Karinthy Frigyes High School, Budapest. The runner-up was Máté Kollmann – student of the Chinese – Hungarian Bilingual School. Both of them got the chance to travel to the finals between 17th and 28th October, held in China, in Yunnan province, city of Kunming.

Within the confines of Confucius Teahouse, our guests could learn more about the whereabouts of the international competition, how the students got to the final 10, what experiences they gained as well as all the adventures they had during this time.

Chinese Kaleidoscope – China with an archaeologist’s eyes

On 20^th of May 2017, we warmly welcome everyone to our next Chinese Kaleidoscope lecture. The guest will be Yvett Paluch-Kujáni, she is a student from Faculty of Arts at University of Szeged. Her major is archaeology.

Her lecture starts at 5 p.m., the topic will Central – China. She will present the cultural and archaeological heritages from Henan and Shaanxi provinces.

Confucius Cathedra – The art of Chinese film sorting

We would like to invite our visirors to join us on our next Confucius Cathedra’s lecture, which will hold on 16^th March 2017, from 5 p.m.

At this time, a very illustrious guest will come, Mr Fei Xie Chinese film dirctor, screenwriter. Mr Xie will arrive to Szeged, for the invitation of SZTE Confucius Institute. From 17^th to 19^th March, we hold Chinese Film Days event, where the visitors can see three film from Mr Xie.

Chinese Kaleidoscope - Literary translation: bridge between China and Hungary

On 21 February, 2017, from 5.00 p.m. our next guest will be Éva Kalmár, in our lecture series, in Kaleidoscope of China. She is a sinologist, translator, editor, university and college instructor.

Her field of expertise is Chinese theater history, she is a very acknowledged interpreter, who transleted several contemporary Chinese novels. She started her university studies in 1956 at Beijing University of Chinese Language and Literature and graduated in 1963.

 

Since 1979, she has worked as an editor at Európa Könyvkiadó, where published the Eastern literature (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mongolian, Korean, etc) for 15 years. More, than 50 books connecting to her name in the editing.

Confucius Teahouse: A geography professor's adventures in China

On 15 February 2017 (Wednesday) 5:00 p.m. we welcome all our visitors to our following Teahouse, where our guest will Dr. László Makra geography professor.

He was born in 1952, in Siklós and currently Associate Professor in the Department of Climatology. He attended several times in China, his main research area of urban air pollution. He is the author of numerous publications.

Confucius Teahouse with Mr Ambassador Sándor Mészáros

 

This year, on 18th January, 2017 we hold our first Confucius Teahouse at 5.00 p.m. Our guest was Mr Sándor Mészáros, formal Hungarian ambassador. Between 1968-1969, he was a student at Marx Károly University of Economics, after than he attended classes at Moscow International Relations Institute.

He is in foreign service from 1974, his work at Beijing Embassy can devided into several sections: he was a diplomat between 1979-1984 and 1988-1993, than he completed service as an ambassador in 2004-2007.

He wrote several books from his past experiences, which have appeared at Kossuth Book Publisher. These books are avilable as an e-book (The Beijing Embassy, I will tell you once) as well. A wide-ranging audience was curious about the ambassador’s interesting expereiences. Our visitors have known the everyday life of the embassies, from the world of diplomacy and also from China.

Double Confucius Teahouse in November

We have a very good news for who are like or events and prefer Chinese tea. In this November, our Institute will organize two Teahouses.

At first time, Yu Zhang (Carolyn) Chinese singer and musician will hosted by Confucius Institute. The visitors can meet with her on 2nd November (Wednesday), 2016. from 5 p.m. in Rector’s Office Ceremonial Hall. Her lecture’s theme is Music: bridge between Hungary and China. A curiosity, that Ms Zhang was a student at University of Szeged. She attended to Faculty of Music, so she has a strong releation to Szeged.

The end of the month has another Teahouse. You can join to us on 30th November (Wednesday) from 5 p.m. in Rector’s Office Ceremonial Hall. On that day, the spotlights turns to the teenagers, becuase two of our students – Patrícia Csóti and Eszter Abigél Farkas – will arrive to our invitation. Their lecture’s theme is China – with teenager eyes. The Insitute gave them an opportunity to spend two weeks in this faraway country. They will make a photo presentation from their experiences.

Ceremonial Teahouse during Mid-Autumn Festival

 

On 15 September (Thursday) in 2016, visitors are kindly invited to this fall’s first Teahouse from 5 p.m. organized by SZTE Confucius Institute. At this time, the Szent-Györgyi Albert Agóra will take place to our event.

In September, our guest will Ádám Gbúr, who are searching Chinese culture and he had a huge enterprise, when he travelled on Silk Road with a motorcycle. Next to Mr Gbúr’s experiences, the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival’s spirit will elapse this Teahouse. On this occasion, we will serve delicious tea with traditional mooncakes.

Lingguan Kong: The Charm of Chinese Calligraphy

Professor Kong Lingguang is the 73. descendant of the family of Confucius. He was born in China’s Henan province and is a Singaporean citizen. The Professor has won numerous titles and awards, both in China and in Singapore. Professor Kong teaches calligraphy in Singapore and works as a professional calligrapher.

During his lecture, Professor Kong is going to introduce the characteristics and special features of calligraphy through his own works. The following morning, the Professor is going to teach calligraphy for those interested between 10 and 11.30 am.

Confucius Teahouse – Si-Mei Eszter Kovács: Kung-fu master with 9 language exams

On 15 June 2016 (Wednesday) the next Confucius Tea House will take place at the Ceremonial Hall of the Rector’s Office from 5:00 p.m. Our guest will be Si-Mei Eszter Kovács, kung-fu master.

In this occasion, we can insight to an extraordinary talent’s relations and experiences with China.

Eszter Kovács has 9 language exams, including Chinese as well. She lived in China for many years, where she met with kung-fu. Nowadays she usurps the highest master grade title in female kung-fu, in Eastern Europe. With his husband, they have a kung-fu school in Szeged.

Mid-Autumn Festival during the Confucius Tea House

 

The art troupe of Beijing Foreign Studies University will come to Szeged on 28 Sept. 2015. Their aim is to impress the audience with their special show. The alumni of the University have more than 400 ambassadors, nearly 1,000 counselors and about 100 ministers. The art troupe of Beijing Foreign Studies University and the Confucius Institute will cooperate to provide a fantastic show.

If you come to our event you can get to know some oriental folklore songs, you can watch a performance from the Beijing Opera, and you will have the chance to see traditional martial art as well. If you haven’t tried the mooncake, don’t miss the opportunity to try this dessert while you are watching our spectacular show.

The very first Confucius Tea House activity is going to be organized by SZTE Confucius Institute and within the confines of this activity, the kind guest can learn new and more things about the past, the present and of the forthcoming future of China.

Ye Zemin writer, literary translator. He has been living in Hungary for several decades, but he became well-known for translating the literary pieces of Kertész Imre into Chinese. At the beginning of the 90s, when he arrived to Hungary, first he looked up Szeged. He will give a lecture about his adventurous life, and also about his Hungarian literary translations into Chinese.

The Chinese economy is the second largest economy of the world, the essential part and prime mover of the global economy. What happens in the Chinese economy has serious influence on the whole global economy. Therefore it is of great importance to pay attention to its actualities, current trends and processes. The presentation focuses on these questions.

 

P. Szabó Sándor is the head of the Research Institute for Chinese Public Administration, Economy and Society at National University of Public Service, director of the School for Eastern Languages, who works as a consultant on Far Eastern business affairs since 1994 and serves as the editor in chief at Sinology Review since 2009.

Liu Zhi: Cooking and decorating Chinese foods

Venue: SZTE Rector’s Office Room V.

 

Within the confines of the lecture, Liu Zhi, chef at the Chinese Great Wall restaurant, tries to describe and give an account of the nearly 5000 years old Far-East gastro culture. After his brief account, he continues the lecture by emphasizing the great importance of the art of decorating Chinese food. He introduces the proper making and serving of Chinese foods. After finishing the Chinese cold dish, guest are welcomed to taste different kind of Chinese foods made by the chef. During the event, Gergely Huszár musician will be playing on his guitar.

 

Liu Zhi the founder of Gasztúra Kultúr Klub, chef at the Chinese Great Wall restaurant. He not only introduces the special foods of his motherland, China, but also organizes Chinese cooking courses in his restaurant.

Prof. Yang Jianwen: The art of Calligraphy

Time: 10 April 2014 (Thursday) 17:30 óra

Venue: SZTE Confucius Institute

 

Yang Jianwen is the expert of traditional Chinese art calligraphy. During his calligraphy research, he has made a breakthrough discovery. He combines the artistic elements of Chinese and Western arts, and mixes the art style characteristics of post-impressionism and modern flat composition in the shaping of calligraphy style. He insists on the uniqueness of calligraphy, which is filled with his own artistic concepts and classical Chinese poetry - when he jots down some poetry lines.

The lecture is held in Chinese with Hungarian interpretation.

Yang Jianwen is a professor of the Shanghai International Studies University, expert of the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy

 

Csaba Wolf:

The diary of a hard-boiled egg – From the City of Sunshine to the sandy beaches of Hainan Island

Time: 27 March 2014 (Thursday), 17:30

Venue: SZTE Confucius Institute

The lecture is a travelogue carried out by a Szegedien former student who tells the story how he got to China at the age of 19; tells about his Chinese university years, and also, about the 80s and 90s life of Beijing.

He will speak about how he became the master of martial arts starting from the handball team of Ságvári Grammar School. He also asserts how he served his country as an economic diplomat in the Far-East in the 90s and in recent years. The lecture’s travelogue will be genial, humorous and unstrained.

Wolf Csaba is the executive advisor of Deloitte international accounting and consulting firm’s Central-eastern European Chinese division. Formerly foreign trade diplomat, master of taekwon-do dan 4, international instructor and last but not least a former Ságvári student.

With a brief introduction of the city’s history, the lecturer will try to offer a glimpse of the charms and beauty of Shanghai which is an unparalleled mixture of Oriental and Western lifestyles and cultures. Shanghai has now established itself not just as an icon of modernity but also as an attitude to life, a brand of lifestyle, and a sign of fashion with its development and transformation in the past 30 years. The lecture will reveal delicately (via stories and pictures) the nostalgic flavor and the bustling metropolis of Shanghai.

It will introduce you the advantages of this great university; the development and present situation of its education for foreign students; its various programs for foreigners; its various scholarships and how to apply for them. It will show you its beautiful campuses, accommodations and foreign students’ wonderful campus life and activities.

This lecture is also a good opportunity to know more about Shanghai. It will show you the great developments of this international city; and its mixture of traditional and modern life, oriental and western culture. You can get information about living, working, transportation and entertainment of Shanghai.

Chinese dreams, Chinese problems – a snapshot of contemporary China

The generation shift in which the 5^th generation headed by Xi Jinping took over control of the Party and the most powerful positions of the state, started a year ago and is practically finished by now. The primary objective of the new President – Secretary General of the Party is to make the “Chinese dream” come true i.e. establishing a world-power in which citizens are satisfied with their welfare. After the amazing development of the last three decades – and actually mainly due to it – China is facing several problems during the one-decade government of the 5^th generation.

The Chinese expansion model has expired, the pace of economic development is slowing down and the country needs a paradigm shift. Increasing social gaps, pollution, corruption and a number of other factors are severe problems the new government has to deal with. Even though China is expected to become the largest economy in the world after the USA in this decade, the next 10 years is not likely to be easy. The lecture presents the results of the Chinese “reform and opening” so far, the most threatening dangers and possible solutions of problems.

Nagy Mercédesz:

Introduction to contemporary Chinese fine arts

In spite of the fact that the socio-economic status and presence of Beijing is considerably different from Western traditional artistic centre concept, it has become one of the most important fine art centres of the world. Art centres existing in symbiosis with socio-political factors – currently there are 7-8 officially recorded studio districts just within the publicly administered are of the capital – keep the whole world excited.

The lecture is about to give an insight into the political, economic, diplomatic and last but not least aesthetic scene of Chinese contemporary art, elaborating on the awaking modern Chinese fine art following the cultural revolution i.e. starting from the avant-garde groups of the 70s and 80s through the globally successful artists of the “political pop” and “cynical realism” up until this year’s Venice Biennale exhibitors.

 

Nagy Mercédesz is a 2002 graduate of the Hungarian literature and grammar, aesthetics and communication majors of the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest. Then, she had been living in Beijing for 5 years working as a reporter and studying at Qinghua University. As a PhD student, her field of research includes the ultra-rapid changes of contemporary Chinese society and their influence on fine arts besides the history of Chinese-Hungarian cultural relationships.

Everything on the sky and the earth is characterized by continuous change: in spring things wake up, in summer they become complete, in autumn they go through eclipse and finally in winter they restore themselves. Those people, who would like to live long and healthy, should lead their lives taking this continuous change into consideration. The warmest period of the year is summer and high temperature has an impact on human bodies’ temperature, digestive system, neurological and urological systems. Consequently, people often face heart problems, have decreased appetite, become tired and weak and may suffer from insomnia.

This current lecture presents different impacts and influences of hot weather on the human body from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine; suggests some methods for keeping ourselves healthy in this particular time of the year and gives advice on how to increase our life quality by following a healthy diet, balancing daily working time and rest and massaging basic acupuncture points.

Xue Yanping: Wang Anyi – The glittering rose of Chinese Literature

Wang Anyi is one of the most excellent Chinese authors – she is referred to as the glittering rose of Chinese literature. She was born in Nanjing but spent most of her life in Shanghai. This large and colourful city gave her inspiration and willingness to write. She is the author of 9 novels, winner or several awards and her most successful work The Ballad of Eternal Sorrow won the most significant Chinese award of Literature: Mao Dun Award. This current lecture presents the history and everyday life of Shanghai through the above mentioned ballad. The Ballad of Eternal Sorrow is the life story of a 40-year-old woman living Shanghai describing her emotions without any mannerism in a melancholic and moving style.

The lecture is held in Chinese with Hungarian interpretation.

Wang Hanwei: The approach to understanding works of art: centering on Dunhuang Art

What are works of art? How is the intellectual power of art reflected? How are the works of art to be understood? These questions are the most fundamental and most significant ones in the field of humanities. The lecture by Professor Wang Hanwei will reveal and emphasize the function of the works of fine arts by interpreting and analyzing these questions/the fundamental questions with the art of Chinese painter Zong Bing in South dynasty, French painter Miller, and French painter of Chinese origin Zhao Wuji, and by recovering some conditions of fresco copying and researching at the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang by some great masters such as Zhang Daqian and Xie Zhiliu. The lecture highlight the great art works from Dunhuang in an effort to understand works of art as a link in the history as the sources of understanding some phenomenon and idea and of generating profound insight.

Wang Hanwei is a well-known professor of the Art History Department of the University of Nanjing, the author of several articles, owner of a great number of art awards including winning the 12th Jiangsu Philosophy and Social Studies Conference on Outstanding Results award for her research on the calligraphies of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang.

Attila Kasznár: The system of Chinese philosophy schools

Religion (in case of China: philosophy!) determines the development of human society. We could even say that practically there is no social development without it – no matter what kind of religion we are talking about: monotheist or polytheist religion or religions. Religion/philosophy gives the individual a framework to find their own mobility. It also limits the individual’s self-actualization but at the same time provides a kind of safety by indicating certain borders.

In order to make the current economic, political and social procedures of the People’s Republic of China clear, it is crucial to get to know the more or less continuous, solid philosophical thought influencing Chinese people’s way of thinking, behaviour and activities. Background knowledge of Chinese philosophy may help us to connect easily and makes it possible to comprehend the social background determining their acts.

Péter Földes: Insight into Chinese foreign policy

The lecture outlines the history of the diplomacy of the People’s Republic of China, the major development stages, characteristics, policies and strategies within the time period of 1949-2012.

Separated into 6 stages chronologically, the brief thematic summary illustrates the development of China’s foreign policy and the consequences of particular historical events.

Development is not only Chinese in its economic respect but diplomacy has also been designed according to the character of the country. That is why from an analytic point of view it is advisable to be aware of the major external and internal effects.

Elaborating on the six major policies of the diplomatic strategy of the People’s Republic of China enables us to follow the changes and extensions of Beijing priorities. At the same time we can get an insight into the „backstage” of foreign policy decision-making i.e. we can examine the embeddedness of the government and some significant government and party institutions. In line with the above, the different categories of Chinese diplomacy are mentioned.

The lecture concludes with an elaboration on the 5-year-plan in focus (2005-2010) from the aspects of both internal and foreign politics. Péter Földes is a former foreign policy diplomat of Beijing and CEO-founder of ChinAssist Consultancy Ltd.
